We head to the Joe Lewis Arena in Detroit, Michigan, where Dan Larkin’s Detroit Red Wings host Coriene’s Anaheim Ducks. Dan made it all the way to the ‘Finals last year, and this year is looking to prove that was no fluke. Coriene on the other hand, is the winningest General Manager in our league’s history (.688 winning percentage over 3 seasons on the strength of 209 wins...an average of 69.7 wins per year). She made it to the ‘Finals in 2005, and is looking for victims to pave her path back there. We’re starting the season, so LET’S GO!
The first period was a showcase of penalties and defense. Coriene’s Ducks held-off the ‘Wings on three 5-on-3 Powerplays. But at the end of 1 period, nobody would find the net.
The 2nd period would finally show some scoring. Four minutes in, Teemu Selanne would score on a give-and-go one-timer with Andy McDonald. After a few more penalties back-and-forth, Pavol Datsyuk would light-the-lamp on the Powerplay, and put Detroit on the board. The period would draw to a close as a tie game, with the score at one a-piece.
The 3rd period would start with Andy McDonald burning Hasek right off the bat, to regain the lead for the Ducks. Midway through the 2nd period, Sheldon Souray would add a short-hander to give Anaheim a 2-goal lead. But, Kris Draper would answer just 8 seconds later, with a Powerplay goal. It would get down to the final minute, and the Red Wings would pull their goalie, but only to allow for a Dustin Penner empty-netter to seal-the-deal. Ducks win by a final score of 4 to 2.
