We head to the Pengrowth Saddledome as (FIRST EVER Game Of The Week in Calgary) Dan's Flames host Christina's Pittsburgh Penguins. Each of these teams have impressive records, but Christina is gunning to show Dan just how "protected" he is in his own little division (Damn you, EA!). Should be a good one...so let's go!
The teams took the first few minutes to feel-each-other-out (eeew), but Jarome Iginla made use of the man-advantage and put Calgary on top with first blood. A few minutes later, Alex Tanguay would widen the gap for Calgary, as he'd add a one-time-goal of his own. This would result in a momentum shift, that would put most of the play in Pittsburgh's end for the remainder of the period. Taking advantage of that, Owen Nolan would one-time a perfect setup by Patrick Elias to add to their lead. And then you know things are getting bad when the 4th line scores, as David Moss would score for the Flames. And that's how the game would end, with Calgary up 4 to nothing
Pittsburgh would get things going early in the 2nd, as Evgeni Malkin would take advantage of a defensive lapse in Calgary's end, and burn a backhander past Miikka Kiprusoff. The Pittsburgh Powerplay would get their share of chances, but they would fail to convert on any of them. So Malkin puts them on the board, but Pittsburgh still trails Calgary by a score of 4 to 1.
The third period would begin as a hard-fought defensive battle. Things were quiet, until Malkin would find the net again, to cut Calgary's lead in-half. But, after a flurry of penalties, the Penguins would fail to get anything going. They'd pull Lehtonen on the penalty-kill (final minute) which is never good, and Patrick Elias would put the final nail in their coffin. Flames win, by a final score of 5 to 2.
