Flames and Pens Duke-It-Out in Calgary

Miikka Kiprusoff (34) gets ready for what would turn-out to be a busy night, stopping 74 Penguin shots all-together.

We head to the Pengrowth Saddledome as (FIRST EVER Game Of The Week in Calgary) Dan's Flames host Christina's Pittsburgh Penguins. Each of these teams have impressive records, but Christina is gunning to show Dan just how "protected" he is in his own little division (Damn you, EA!). Should be a good one...so let's go!

Jarome Iginla (12) puts the Flames on-the-board with this goal in the 1st.

The teams took the first few minutes to feel-each-other-out (eeew), but Jarome Iginla made use of the man-advantage and put Calgary on top with first blood. A few minutes later, Alex Tanguay would widen the gap for Calgary, as he'd add a one-time-goal of his own. This would result in a momentum shift, that would put most of the play in Pittsburgh's end for the remainder of the period. Taking advantage of that, Owen Nolan would one-time a perfect setup by Patrick Elias to add to their lead. And then you know things are getting bad when the 4th line scores, as David Moss would score for the Flames. And that's how the game would end, with Calgary up 4 to nothing

"Scary" Gary Roberts (10) looks-on helplessly as David Moss (58) punches-one-in for the Calgary 4th line.

Pittsburgh would get things going early in the 2nd, as Evgeni Malkin would take advantage of a defensive lapse in Calgary's end, and burn a backhander past Miikka Kiprusoff. The Pittsburgh Powerplay would get their share of chances, but they would fail to convert on any of them. So Malkin puts them on the board, but Pittsburgh still trails Calgary by a score of 4 to 1.

Evgeni Malkin (71) would be the only Penguin to show-up. Here he backhands-in his first of two goals on the night, enroute to 3rd Star honors.

The third period would begin as a hard-fought defensive battle. Things were quiet, until Malkin would find the net again, to cut Calgary's lead in-half. But, after a flurry of penalties, the Penguins would fail to get anything going. They'd pull Lehtonen on the penalty-kill (final minute) which is never good, and Patrick Elias would put the final nail in their coffin. Flames win, by a final score of 5 to 2.

Alex Tanguay (40) drills-home a one-timer for this 1st period Calgary goal.
