For this next game of the week, we head to Madison Square Garden in New York, as Kevin's New York Rangers will host Amy's Philadelphia Flyers. Amy's Flyers (39-14-11) have been the suprise of this year, coming into this game tied for 2nd (standings points) in the Atlantic Division (with Christina's Pittsburgh Penguins). But Kevin's Rangers (42-15-8) are proving time-and-again that they are the "Team To Beat" in the East. Get ready, as we head to the ice for this Atlantic Division showdown!
It wouldn't take long for the scoring to get started. A Dennis Gauthier penalty would put the Rangers on the power-play, and Jaromir Jagr would score on a give-and-go (with Chris Drury) for a powerplay goal. But, Steve Sullivan would march right back, and even-things-up a mere minute-and-a-half later. The same line would score just two minutes later as Simon Gagne would drive home a pass from Daniel Briere for the goal. Philly would maintain the momentum, as Marc Savard would score just two minutes later! But, the Rangers continued to be dangerous on the powerplay, as Brendan Shanahan would take advantage of yet another Philadelphia penalty, and bring the Rangers within one. As if this period wasn't crazy-enough, Shanahan would do it again, scoring to tie the game just five minutes later. And five minutes after that, Jaromir Jagr would get his second goal to put the Rangers back on top. That's how the 1st period would end, with the Rangers up on the Flyers, by a score of 4 to 3.
For a change of pace, the two teams came out and played defense for a bit. But that didn't stop Mike Richards from tying-up the game for Philly. Things would stay fairly tight, until Brian Gionta scored another powerplay goal for New York. Jeez, mental note for Philly...you might want to stay out of the penalty box. Of course they wouldn't listen, and Philly would close-out the period on a penalty kill. But, it turned-out to be a blessing in disguise, as Marc Savard would get his second goal (short-handed!) to tie the game with 8 seconds remaining in the period. The period would end, with the score tied at 5.
New York came-out gunning for the lead, and took it on a goal by Alexander Frolov. Ladislav Nagy would get a goal at 10:20 to tie it up for Philly, but Scott Gomez would score 6 seconds later to get back the lead. That's how things would sit for a while, until Simon Gagne would get his second goal of the game with less than 3 minutes remaining. And that's how things would stay for the remainder of the period. We're tied and 7, and going to overtime!
Well, the OT period was over quick, as Chris Drury capped-off a 4-assist night by scoring the game-winner in overtime, just a minute and four seconds in. And that's how we'd end, as the New York Rangers defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 8 to 7, in overtime.
