Today we head to the crumbling Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh, PA, as Christina's Penguins will host Brian Gensch's Tampa Bay Lightning. With the top-spot in the Southeast Division, Brian has secured his spot as the #3 seed going into the Easter Conference playoffs. He's just looking to grease-the-wheels a little more, before exploding onto the playoff scene. Christina simliarly has locked-up the #5 seed, and is also looking to coast a little before ramping-up for the big dance. So, here's me trying to write something interesting about a game that really doesn't mean much...Let's go!
Wow. No sooner had I stared the game, than we had our first goal. Saku Koivu beat Sid "The Kid" Crosby on the opening faceoff, stickhandled his way around 2 guys, and burried it past Kari Lehtonen to put Tampa up by one. That lead would last a whopping 45 seconds, as Sergei Gonchar would blast one from the circle to even things-up. After the 1st minute of play, things were quiet until Ryan Whitney picked-up a Saku Koivu rebound, and accidentally burried it into his own net...and Tampa has the lead. A lead which they'd add-to, as Dan Boyle would slam-home a rebound from Vinnie Lecavallier for a powerplay goal. And that's how the first period would end; with Tampa leading Pittsburgh by a score of 3 to 1.
And right-away, we would start to see how Pittsburgh's 5 minor penalties (in the 1st period) would hurt them, as Glenn Murray would score another powerplay goal for the Lightning...just 22 seconds in. Then, Vaclav Prospal would win a faceoff against Eric Staal, and beat everybody for another Tampa goal...just 6 seconds later. A few minute later, Blair Jones would add another goal to the Tampa madness. But, don't count-out Pittsburgh just yet, as Jordan Staal would deke Luongo for a powerplay goal. A few minute later, Eric Cairns would hit Miro Satan for a break-in pass, that he would take and also deke Luongo for a powerplay goal. And shortly after that, Gary Roberts would punch-one-in from the top of the crease. And just when you thought things couldn't get any crazier, Sidney Crosby punches-one-in not even a minute later, for Pittsburgh's FOURTH-STRAIGHT-GOAL IN SEVEN MINUTES. The second period would end, with Tampa Bay leading Pittsburgh by a score of 6 to 5.
A few penalties were exchanged early-on, and Brad Richards would add another Tampa goal in the ensuing four-on-four. Now it would be Pittsburgh's turn to go on a few powerplays, but they could just not convert. Finally, with a minute left, they pulled Marc-Andre Fleury (backup goaltender) and allowed Nolan Pratt his 2nd goal of the year. This one's over, and Tampa defeates Pittsburgh by a final score of 8 to 5.
