Here we go, to Madison Square Garden in New York, New York for our league's FIRST EVER Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Finals! This time, there will be no staving-off elimination...someone will go home unfulfilled, and someone will bask in Lord Stanley's glory! On one side, we have Joel's St.Louis Blues. Joel's Blues have had a great season, and a sensational playoff run in which they jumped-out to a 3-0 lead in this series. Now they just have to finish-off the Rangers for Joel's second Stanley Cup. Kevin on the other hand has never been this far in the playoffs before. His guys are really pushing the envelope, and have staged a miraculous comeback to force this Game Seven. THIS is what it's all about!
It was a tight defensive battle for a while, with neither team getting too many shots to speak of. But, New York would take advantage of an early powerplay, as Brendan Shanahan would score. Things were quiet for the remainder of the period, until Chris Drury would score [another powerplay goal] for the Rangers with a minute to to go. And that's how the period would end, with the Rangers leading by a score of 2 to nothing.
St.Louis would strike first in the 2nd period, as Vladimir Orszagh would pop-one-in to narrow the gap. Halfway through the period, Doug Weight would notch a powerplay marker for St.Louis to tie the game. There would be more-than-a-few penalties on the New York side of things, but St.Louis would fail to convert again. The 2nd period is over, with the score tied at 2.
This was a low-scoring game if you compare it to the rest of the...well...playoffs. The 3rd period would start with St.Louis successfully-killing-off a powerplay. That momentum would carry-through, as Olli Jokinen would net his 34th (of the playoffs) to give St.Louis their first lead of the game. But, shortly-there-after Chris Drury would score [again] to end St.Louis' run of 3 unanswered goals. That wouldn't stop Jokinen from scoring again though, taking advantage of a Fedor Tyutin penalty. With the final minute looming, New York would pull Roloson for the extra attacker for a (with a powerplay) 6-on-4 advantage. They would hit Martin Brodeur with a few good shots, but none would pass. Time would expire, and the ST.LOUIS BLUES WIN THE STANLEY CUP!
